Bury Yourself In a Book!

A caver since 1966, I’ve accumulated a large collection of caving books, magazines, surveys and related materials.

In addition to caving materials you can also find books about maps, hiking and other outdoor activities and attractions.

I need to downsize so I’m offering them for sale. It’s going to take a long time even just to create a basic list so keep revisiting to find more. Initially I won’t be showing an asking price but offers are welcome.  P&P is a minimum of £3.95 per shipment but is subject to size, weight and destination.  You may also pick up items in person from Sheffield UK by prior agreement.

You should regard all items as being in “used” condition, their value lies in their content rather than their condition.

Items listed on this website may have already been sold as there is a time interval between completion of a sale and the website being updated.

Most items are initially listed with only very basic information, an internet search will add more detail from other sources and you are welcome to enquire.

Most items will not have a price shown, they are open to offers.

The collection is largely UK caving area oriented material but an eclectic mix of indirectly interesting to cavers like show-cave guides, a fair amount of mining (Peak District) and some rare oddities.

Recommendations

Descent magazine

Every issue since the very first in January 1969 to the very latest Feb 2024

A quarter century of caving history. This set includes a few additional one-off Descent publications (cumulative article index, UK cave club directory).

These are in “used” condition.  That means they are not in pristine condition although many are but a few may have been folded or have small annotations. The staples have gone a little rusty in some of the oldest . Consider the value to lie in the content.

The collection weighs tens of kilos, shipping will be expensive or they can be collected by prior arrangement.

They are sold as a single lot with a “buy now” price of £2000 but reasonable offers will be considered.  The set will not be split.

More details of individual issues can be found at the websites of wildplaces.co.uk and descentmagazine.co.uk Both those websites sell individual issues but neither has the complete set.

First issue, Jan 1989

This was a very small inexpensively produced print-run. Over future years quality progressively improved, eventually becoming the full colour larger format we see today.
